Flying Jazzman Quintet, jazz that swings…

After playing as a sideman for American and Danish jazz icons in the old school jazz, swing and New Orleans genre such as NOLA clarinetist Evan Christopher, Danish guitar virtuoso Jakob Fischer among others, pianist Jan Nielsen started his own band in 2016 under the name Flying Jazzman Quintet. The band plays the 30-40’s jazz standards in a fresh style with clear threads to the old days of swinging jazz from dance halls and small jazz clubs. In 2017 the band started working together with the Danish swing dance society and accommodated their repertoire to fit the national and international swing events in Denmark.

The musicians have all been handpicked from different backgrounds on the Danish music scene but all with a love for old school jazz music. Band leader Jan Nielsen’s piano playing are strongly influenced by the music of Oscar Peterson, Errol Garner and Gene Harris. Ole Ulvedal, on upright bass delivers a steady Ray Brown pulse. The drummer Søren Pedersen who himself have lead the band Brassflavours tickles the drums. On clarinet and saxophone Mads Rahbek bring back memories to Benny Goodman and Ben Webster. The trumpet is played by master blaster Jesper Riis who beyond playing in some of the best bands in Denmark also is a sought after arranger and conductor of the Danish Radio Big Band.

The band is performing at most of the Danish jazzfestivals, jazz clubs and swing events, as well as playing at private and corporate events.
